The River Project by Olga Grotova
Canary Wharf is London's second major financial district, a generic space of concrete office buildings and retail spaces, a symbol of today's economy. However, back in the 1800's it was one of the busiest docks in the world with river Thames at the core. My project is about interaction of the river with its newly built surroundings and an attempt to reclaim the force of nature to people inhabiting the lifeless office spaces.
My emphasis was on the organic process of obtaining my final images.
I poured crystal resin on the sheets of paper, imitating the flow of the waters of the river and while it was still wet I began throwing in different materials like inks, silver and copper powder, gold peel and mother of pearl shavings, just as if they were the goods that once were transported down the river towards the docks. The final images are results of the resin settling and having the traces of those materials embedded in it.
